So, we decided that we are going to go on a little trip over spring break. Steve's spring break is the week of March 9th. So... that's really soon! But, anyway, we decided that since we are living out here in an area remotely close to many neat sites, we should take advantage of that. Plus, this could be our last time to try to go out and take a trip with just the two of us before life becomes a little more complicated with the addition of a new member.
So, it is decided. We are going to.........

Washington DC!

Neither of us have ever been there, and of course there is TONS we'd love to see there! It is about an 8 hour drive. So, not SUPER close, but within reasonable distance for a week long trip.

We'd love to hear any suggestions or warnings from anyone who has been there before.

*Places to stay?

*Areas to avoid?

*Sights that are a MUST SEE?

*An awesome dining experience we shoudn't miss out on?

*Advice on public transportation?

That should be really fun. I've been there before, and I loved it. My favorite things were all the memorials, especially the Lincoln Memorial. Hopefully you'll be there when all the trees are blossoming. That's so pretty!

Also, I didn't know you were pregnant! CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so happy for you!! That's the best news ever! You'll make such great parents!

Well if you need advice we live here, we are only about 20 min. outside of DC. We should try and get together why you two are here. The funny thing is we are going to Columbus for spring break two weeks after you guys.

Jenni, we went to DC over spring break last year. We had tons of fun and saw a lot, but there's no way that you can see it all in a week... just prepare yourself for that.

I think one of the most interesting things we did was the holocaust museum, don't miss it. Transportation will be easy, the Metro goes everywhere you want to go. Also, we went to Monticello, which is way out in Virginia, but I hear that Mt. Vernon is awesome too (which we didn't get to see) and much closer (accessible by the Metro). Anyway, you should check out my post from our trip. It was March 2008. Have fun!

I really have no advice but am glad that you are able to go. How fun to be able to just take off for a week. Enjoy some of your last moments of alone time! :)

Hey Jenn, I live in downtown DC. The National Mall with all the Monuments and all of the Smithsonian Museums is great. Let me know when you're in town and maybe we can meet for dinner? The metro (subway) is cheap and easy to figure out. For eating, there a lots of different places to try in Georgetown and the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Like one of your friends mentioned, Mt. Vernon (George Washington's Plantation) is relatively close, accessible by metro and really cool. I've been there several times. Drop me a message if you want to know more or would like to meet up. Take care and have fun!

DC is so fun! We took advantage of driving out since we live so close, too.
I would definitely consider the holocaust musuem since you don't have kids yet. We wanted to go, but kids under a certain age aren't allowed in.
We found some free parking south of the FDR memorial and then walked around to see all the memorials in one day. One day we took the metro in to go the musuems. That is convient but a little pricey. Just plan to get lost driving, it is crazy downtown (but worth it).
We also went to Mt. Vernon and the view is beautiful (there is actually a scene of Mt Vernon in the movie Pelican Brief).
One last thing- I love the song on your blog "Come thou fount of every blessing" That is one of my favorite songs.

DC is really fun and the great thing is that everything at the mall is free to see! You'll have a great time, but be prepared for lots and lots of walking :) When we went we stayed outside of DC in Springville and rode the metro in. That was nice because we didn't have to deal with the crazy DC traffic, but I would recommend staying closer than Springville because the commute into DC on the metro was almost 45 minutes one way. And I would definitely recommend using priceline.com to book your hotel. You can get a nice 3 star hotel for like $45/night. You have to use the "name your own price" option though. Email me if you want help with that and I can walk you through it. Have so much fun!! Feel free to make another 4 hour drive down here to visit us if you want ;)

How fun! I've never been to DC so I have no idea what you should visit, but I know Jared's been there and he loved it, so I'm sure you'll have tons of fun! It's funny how everyone is doing something for spring break, Jared and I our going to Michigan for his spring break, but not to do anything really fun Jared's going to check out the school and we need to find a place to live. But I hope you two have fun on your trip!
